A reflection on Peru
“The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” – Samuel Johnson
Getting to go to Peru was such an incredible experience I’m so grateful to have been able to partake in. When I signed-up for this International Media at the suggestion of my friend and fellow traveler Macy St. Clair I didn’t really know what to expect from the class or trip. Throughout the semester we studied how politics of Peru have shaped their media style, but learning about a country is nothing compared to being immersed in it and experiencing everything firsthand. Being immersed in another culture is something everyone should aim to do as often as possible. I enjoyed everyday in Peru so its hard to think what my favorite part of the trip was. Naturally I loved the food but aside from that the tours and interviews were great. I really enjoyed getting to talk to such prominent Peruvian figures and I feel we really lucked out with the tour guides we got as well because they were fun to listen to and we all really learned a lot. I thought everyone in our group was wonderful and the dynamic worked out great and I’m so happy I got to go on this study abroad trip.

I loved the quote Stef. I think that getting to speak with these prominent Peruvian figures was one of my favorite parts of the trip as well. I felt like I was so important getting to talk to them and I learned so much from them. I thought the group was wonderful as well. We all clicked and got along so well. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to have travelled with!
I like the quote as well and the idea of immersion within to a country. Did you find that total immersion was challenging at times? I would think the language barrier would be something to overcome, especially in just everyday doings like eating, shopping, ect. Did you get a chance to look into their journalism, for example look at their newspapers or watch any type of television? If so, was the set up different compared to the newspapers here? The scenery seems beautiful, and it seems like everyone on your group had a fabulous trip. I am glad so many students from WVU were able to go and experience this trip.
